About Civitascope

Civitascope publishes short stories made from the data of Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. Each story takes one measure, such as the minimum wage or the share of people who use generative AI tools, and compares the EU countries on it.

How a story is made

A card for every dataset. Before a Eurostat dataset is used, it gets a card: what it measures, in Eurostat's own words; which of its figures a story uses; and what a reader should know, such as estimates, breaks in a series or countries without data. The card is checked against Eurostat's metadata and publications and approved by the editor.

Built from Eurostat's API. A program fetches the figures from Eurostat's public API, ranks the countries and writes the sentences that state the numbers. No figure is typed in by hand.

Every number can be traced. Each number in a story links to the Eurostat figure it comes from or to the computation behind it. Every story has a page that shows how its numbers were computed, with the exact API queries and a fingerprint (SHA-256) of each Eurostat response the story was built from.
